Ingredients

  • split urad dal (black lentils)
  • basmati or short-grain rice
  • ghee
  • cumin seeds
  • bay leaf
  • ginger, grated
  • turmeric
  • salt
  • water

Ingredients

  • 0.5 cup split urad dal (black lentils)
  • 1 cup basmati or short-grain rice
  • 1 tbsp ghee
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 leaf bay leaf
  • 1 tsp ginger, grated
  • 0.5 tsp turmeric
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 4 cups water

Instructions

  1. Rinse rice and dal together; soak for 15 minutes.
  2. Heat ghee in a pressure cooker; add cumin seeds and bay leaf and let sizzle.
  3. Add ginger, turmeric, and the soaked rice-dal mixture; stir 1 minute.
  4. Add water and salt; pressure cook for 2 whistles on medium heat.
  5. Let pressure release naturally; open and stir to a creamy consistency.
  6. Serve hot with a drizzle of extra ghee and a side of pickle.
